Powered vessels use an Engine Cut Off Switch (ECOS) to kill the engines to prevent a runaway or circle of death when the operator falls overboard. For vessels under sail there is often no option for an ejected sailor but to watch as the boat sails away. With additional crew aboard and awake and trained, a fall overboard can result in a wet, but rescued sailor. When sailing alone or with a novice, a fall overboard can be fatal. A sailboat making only 2 or 3 knots will stay out of reach of even the strongest of swimmers.
Rescuers may be miles and hours away. The SSRS gives you a fighting chance to survive.
An appropriate sized sea anchor fitted into the SSRS canister and attached by a prepositioned painter to the vessel’s bow is automatically deployed when a wireless MOB* or certain PLB devices are triggered.
The SSRS power can be hard wired to the vessel’s power supply, NMEA backbone, or use the onboard battery pack and solar charger to operate as a self contained package with nearly indefinite battery life.
As an option, an inflatable horseshoe or other buoyant apparatus can be fastened to the line and deployed with the contents of the SSRS. If the ejected sailor is injured or too exhausted to haul himself out of the water, he can inflate the horseshoe until he’s ready to climb out - or if unable, wait for rescue. (SSRS activates AIS/DSC, if equipped.)
Motorsailers will enjoy the benefit of both the SSRS and ECOS functions of the system.
